Terms of Service

1. Who we are

Lantern (“Lantern”, “the app”, “we”, “us”) is a language companion app that helps adults understand real-world German they encounter in daily life, explained in a language they choose. Lantern is operated by:

By creating an account or using Lantern you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

2. Who may use Lantern

You must be at least 16 years old to use Lantern. By using the app you confirm that you are 16 or older and legally able to enter into these Terms.

You need an account to use Lantern. You create one by signing in with Apple or Google. You are responsible for keeping access to your sign-in method secure.

3. What Lantern does

Lantern lets you enter text and returns explanations — meaning, grammar, and usage notes — and lets you save vocabulary and review it over time.

Explanations are generated in part by automated language models. They are provided for learning and general information only. They can be incomplete or wrong, and they are not professional, legal, medical, or certified-translation advice. Do not rely on them where accuracy is critical.

4. Your content

You keep all rights to the text you enter and the vocabulary you save (“Your Content”). You grant us only the limited licence needed to operate the app: to process, store, and transmit Your Content so we can return explanations and sync your data across the service.

You are responsible for what you enter. Do not submit content that is unlawful, that infringes someone else’s rights, or that contains other people’s personal data you have no right to share.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

6. Availability and changes

Lantern is provided on an “as available” basis. We may change, suspend, or discontinue features at any time, and we may update the app for security, legal, or product reasons.

We may update these Terms. If a change is material, we will give reasonable notice in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Lantern after a change means you accept the updated Terms.

7. Ending your use

You may stop using Lantern and delete your account at any time from the app’s account settings. Deleting your account removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy.

We may suspend or close an account that breaches these Terms or the law, or where required to protect the service or other users.

8. Liability

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for intent or gross negligence, or under mandatory statutory rights.

Subject to that, Lantern is provided without warranty that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that its explanations are accurate, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss arising from your reliance on automatically generated explanations.

9. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, without prejudice to mandatory consumer-protection rules of the country where you live.
